Biographie de System of a Down :

Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian et Shavo Odadjian se sont connus dans le même collège privé arménien à Los Angeles. Au début des années 1990 les deux premiers jouaient dans un groupe baptisé Soil. Ils firent appel à Shavo pour les manager, et ce dernier a fini par prendre la place de bassiste lorsque celui de Soil s'est désisté en 1994. Peu de temps après le groupe a perdu son batteur, et a décidé par la même occasion de changer d'orientation musicale, basée cette fois-ci sur la complicité entre Daron et Shavo, Soil devient System of a Down. Le groupe devient enfin complet lorsque le batteur John Dolmayan les rejoint, le groupe pouvait enfin se lancer.

Ils ont bien évidemment commencé par enregistrer une démo huit titres, démo qu'ils ont ensuite fait circuler dans les bars et salles de concert de Los Angeles. System of a Down se forgea vite une petite popularité et fut finalement repéré en 1997 par le producteur Rick Rubin (Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Ce dernier proposa de les signer et de produire leur premier album. System of a Down sort donc en 1998, et bouscule par la même occasion le milieu du Metal en apportant un son nouveau et diverses influences orientales mêlées à un Metal sans concession. Pour promouvoir l'album le groupe se lance dans une tournée avec Slayer et Sepultura, ce qui aida forcément à les faire connaître malgré les différences musicales entre ces groupes.

C'est en 2001 que System of a Down explose en terme de popularité avec Toxicity, album vendu à six millions d'exemplaires, et vite devenu culte de par la qualité de ses chansons. Le côté déjanté et engagé du groupe, ainsi que leurs mélodies et leur agressivité, font qu'ils plaisent à une large majorité de personnes. Au même titre que KoRn, SoaD est l'un des rares groupes à déborder du Metal en terme d'auditoire.

En 2002 un album composé d'inédits circule sur le net, il est vite intitulé "Toxicity 2". Ce dernier regroupe en fait des chutes de studio issues des enregistrements de l'éponyme et de leur dernier disque. Conscient de l'intérêt de ses fans pour ces titres diffusés en qualité médiocre, le groupe décide de réenregistrer une partie de ces chutes et les sort sur Steal This Album !, titre ironique qui retrace un peu l'histoire de cet album que le groupe refuse de considérer tel. Ne voulant faire aucune tournée de promotion pour STA !, le groupe prit une année sabbatique, ne donnant que deux concerts lors du Reading Festival et ne faisant qu'un clip, pour Boom !, réalisé sous la houlette de Michael Moore (Sleep Now In The Fire de RATM, Bowling For Columbine, Farenheit 11/9...) pour dénoncer la guerre en Irak.
Cette année là Serj Tankian sort, sous son label Serjical Strike, Serart en collaboration avec Arto Tuncboyaciyan (responsable de l'Outro de Toxicity). Très actif, il s'occupe également de l'ONG Axis of Justice qu'il a fondé avec Tom Morello d'Audioslave (et ex-Rage Against The Machine). Outre des actions sociales, ils cherchent par dessus tout à informer les gens sur les problèmes géo-politiques qui les entourent.

Le groupe retourne en studio en 2004 pour enregistrer la suite très attendue de Toxicity. System of a Down a cependant eu une créativité qui s'est révélée fort productive et décida d'enregistrer un double album qui sortit en deux deux temps, Mezmerize en Mai 2005, et Hypnotize en Novembre 2005. Le quatuor fut vivement critiqué suite à ces deux albums, la faute à un léger revirement d'orientation musicale, et au fait que les deux albums soient particulièrement courts. Quoiqu'il en soit, ces Mezmerize et Hypnotize ont cartonné partout dans le monde, et System of a Down s'impose aujourd'hui comme un groupe incontournable du Metal.
